NTT America が DC にディプロイする燃料電池とは？

NTT America Deploys Bloom Energy Servers

NTT America announced Thursday that it has deployed Bloom Energy Servers at its Lundy Data Center in San Jose, California. The five Energy Servers will supply 500 kW of total capacity.

この木曜日（7/28）に NTT America が、San Jose, California の Lundy Data Center に、Bloom Energy Servers をディプロイしたと発表した。 その、5 台の Energy Servers からは、合計で 500 KW が供給されるはずだ。

As part of NTT America’s energy efficiency initiatives, they monitored advancements in energy conservation technologies and selected Bloom Energy’s proven fuel cell technology, running on directed biogas.  The fuel cells at the Lundy data center will be connected to a natural gas pipeline, and utilize biogas from a California dairy farm to generate electricity on-site. Distributed generation means electricity is generated where it will be used, allowing NTT America to reduce the amount of energy loss due to transmission across power lines, increasing efficiency and trimming costs.

NTT America における、エネルギー効率イニシアティブの一環として、エネルギーを節約するための技術進歩がモニターされてきた。 そして、そこで選択された Bloom Energy が、燃料電池のテクノロジーを証明し、バイオガスへと向かわせることになった。  Lundy データセンターにおける燃料電池は、California の農場から得られるバイオガスを利用するために、天然ガスのパイプラインに接続され、オンサイトで発電することになる。 こうした、分散型の発電は、電力の地産地消をもたらす。それにより NTT America は、送電線網における電力ロスを回避し、効率を高め、経費を低減していく。

“As one of the major data center operators in the world, we recognize the importance of energy efficiency and the need for distributed generation and use of clean fuels,” said Kazuhiro Gomi, president and CEO of NTT America. “Equally important is our enterprise customers’ interest in, and support of, energy efficiency both from the environmental and cost reduction avenues.  As a key driver for the future of the data center, NTT America will continue to evaluate, support and deploy technologies that can be environmentally sound and cost effective for our customers.”

『 世界の主要データセンターの一員として、エネルギー効率の重要性および、分散型の発電と、クリーン燃料の重要性は認識している。 さらに、私たちの顧客であるエンタープライズ･ユーザーたちも、同様に関心を持ち、また、サポートしたがっている。環境とコストの面で、エネルギー効率は重要である。  将来のデータセンターにおいて重要な役割を担う NTT America は、費用効果の高いテクノロジーの評価／サポート／ディプロイを継続することで、顧客にとっても重要となる、環境の保護を促進していく』と、CEO of NTT America の Kazuhiro Gomi は発言している。

Data Center Use Increasing

Earlier this month AT&T announced that it would install fuel cells at 11 sites in California to generate 7.5 megawatts of power. Bloom Energy officially unveiled their fuel cell in March 2010 and noted several large customers including Bank of America, Coca-Cola, eBay, FedEx, Staples and Wal-Mart.

7月のはじめに、AT&T は California の 11 サイトに燃料電池をインストールし、7.5MW を発電していくと発表した。 Bloom Energy は、2010年 3月に、燃料電池を公表している。そして、Bank of America や、Coca-Cola、eBay、FedEx、Staples、Wal-Mart といった顧客を有していることにも注目すべきだ。

NTT America is the U.S. subsidiary of NTT Communications Corporation, the global data and IP services arm of NTT Corporation, who is listed #31 on the Fortune Global 500 list. Other energy efficiency initiatives include hot aisle/cold aisle server rack design, aisle containment solutions, high efficiency computer room air conditioner (CRAC) cooling systems, distributed electricity generation and dynamic temperature sensor/control technology. NTT America’ operates six Enterprise Hosting data center locations in the U.S. throughout New York, Connecticut, Virginia and California.

NTT America は、NTT Communications Corporation のアメリカ法人として、グローバル･データと NTT IP サービスを担い、また、Fortune Global 500 の 31番目にリストアップされている。 その他の、エネルギー効率イニシアティブとしては、ホット･アイル／コールド･アイルのサーバー･ラック･デザインや、アイル分離のソリューション、CRAC（ computer room air conditioner）による効率化、分散発電、ダイナミックな温度の検出と制御などの、テクノロジーに取り組んでいる。 NTT America がアメリカで運用するエンタープライズ･データセンターは 6ヶ所であり、New York および、Connecticut、Virginia、California に配置されている。

OpSource, the cloud house, has been bought by Dimension Data, a $4.7 billion global ICT services and solutions provider and a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT Holdings headquartered in South Africa. As it happens NTT is an investor in OpSource, or was. Dimension Data has now bought NTT’s piece out.

クラウド･ハウスである OpSource は、NTT Holdings の 100％ 子会社であり、グローバル ICT サービスを提供する、ソリューション･プロバイダー Dimension Data（South Africa が本拠）により、$4.7 billion で買収された。 この買収劇が起きたとき、NTT は OpSource に投資していたのか、あるいは、資金を引き上げていたのか？ いずれにせよ、Dimension Data が、NTT の一部分を買収したことに変わりはない。

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed but OpSource saw $56.5 million in funding over the years from Artiman Ventures, Crosslink Capital, Intel Capital, Key Venture Partners, Velocity and NTT. NTT owned 5% of OpSource since 2009.

この買収の条件が発表されていないが、OpSource は Artiman Ventures および、Crosslink Capital、Intel Capital、Key Venture Partners、Velocity、NTT などから、数年かけて  $56.5 million の資金を得ていた。 NTT に関しては、2009年から 5% の OpSource 株を所有していた。

OpSource public cloud platforms are also hosted in NTT America’s data centers in Virginia and California and expansion into one of NTT Europe’s data centers is expected in Q3.

また、OpSource のパブリック･クラウド･プラットフォームは、NTT America のデータセンターである Virginia と California でホストされ、また、2011 年 Q3には NTT Europe のデータセンターに拡張されるらしい。

Anyway, Dimension Data says it wants OpSource to accelerate its global cloud strategy. Time-to-market don’t you know. It’s set up a centralized Cloud Solutions Business Unit reporting to Dimension Data CEO Brett Dawson where it’ll plunk OpSource and all of its 150 people, down to accounts receivable. Other resources will follow OpSource into the unit.

とにかく、Dimension Data が言うには、OpSource のグローバル･クラウド戦略を加速させたいらしい。 つまり、Time-To-Market がキーワードなわけだ。 Dimension Data の CEO である Brett Dawson をレポート･ラインとする、センタライズされた Cloud Solutions Business Unit が、OpSource および、150人の従業員、そして売掛債権までをサポートすることになる。 また、OpSource をサポートする他のリソースも、そのユニットの中に取り込まれるだろう。

We shall have to wait to see if OpSource CEO Treb Ryan winds up running the whole megillah. Dawson says the acquisition aligns with Dimension Data’s plans to become a services-led business. Over the past few years, the South African concern has been building cloud-related skills and capabilities in virtualization, data center and storage, managed services and hosting, and IT outsourcing – all critical to enabling cloud architectures for its clients.

最終的に、この絵巻物の全体を、OpSource の CEO である Treb Ryan が動かすことになるかは、これから確認されるべきことだ。Dawson が言うには、この買収は、サービス主体のビジネスへ向けた、Dimension Data の計画に取り込まれていく。 これまでの数年において、この South African 企業は、仮想化および、データセンター、ストレージ、マネージド･サービス、ホスティング、IT アウトソーシングなどにより、クラウドに関連する経験と能力を構築してきた。それら全てが、クリティカルなものであり、また、顧客のクラウド･アーキテクチャを実現してきたものである。

With OpSource, it gets an actual cloud and managed services outfit, a set of services, a cloud architecture and experience in cloud services that it can pair with its native skills in complex multinational systems integration that it figures are critical to helping organizations adopt a cloud architecture.

OpSource と連携することで、実際のクラウドと、一揃いのマネージド･サービス、そしてサービスのセットおよび、そのためのアーキテクチャとエクスペリエンスが得られる。それらは、複雑な多国籍システムとの統合において、ネイティブな要素とペアにすることができる。そのことが、組織がクラウド･アーキテクチャを採用する際の支援において、クリティカルなものになっていく。

In a statement OpSource CEO and co-founder Treb Ryan said, "Mapping a migration path and architectural design for cloud is complex and requires in-depth understanding of an organization’s entire IT infrastructure, architecture, and relative interdependencies and risks. An understanding of IT integration across disparate multi-technology, multi-geography IT environments is critical to evolving toward cloud-based architectures. We believe that as part of Dimension Data, OpSource will be better able to capitalize on the global cloud computing market opportunity."

Although OpSource has operations in the UK, Ireland and India its international business leaves a lot to be desired. Dimension Data, on the other hand, is cozy with two-thirds of the Global 500. OpSource also expects to be able to fan its telecom business.

OpSource が、UK および、Ireland、India で事業を展開しているが、そのインターナショナルなビジネス形態は、数多くの要望を抱えていると思われる。 その一方で、Dimension Data は、Global 500 の 2/3 に対して良い仕事をしている。 さらに OpSource は、テレコム･ビジネスへの広がりも期待している。

It claims 600-odd enterprises, service providers and SaaS ISVs use its cloud computing and hosting environments. Data Dimension is reportedly the largest reseller of Cisco equipment worldwide and the biggest of the vBlock handlers.

それにより、同社のコンピューティングをホスティングの環境を利用する、600 社余りのエンタープライズや、サービス･プロバイダー、SaaS ISVs を獲得する。 伝えられるところによると、Dimension Data は、世界最大の Cisco リセラーであり、また、vBlock ハンドラーである。

Conveniently, OpSource and VCE, the Virtual Computer Environment Company put together by Cisco and EMC and representing VMware and Intel’s interests as well, struck a pact a few weeks ago when VCE found itself embarrassingly short of so-called orchestration widgetry for its supposed-to-be-so-simple pre-packaged pre-qualified vBlock compute, networking, storage, virtualization and management technologies.

好都合なことに、 OpSource と VCE（Cisco と EMC が構成し、VMware と Intel の代理でもある Virtual Computer Environment Company）は 、数週間前に提携している。その背景には、vBlock のコンピューティングと、ネットワーキング、ストレージ、仮想化、管理などのテクノロジーを、きわめてシンプルにプリ･パッケージし、オーケストレーションとして品質を保証するだけの能力を、VCE 自身が有していないことがある。

OpSource is providing those precious hourly, subscription-based it-can’t-be-cloud-without-them pieces like sign-up, metering, billing, reporting and self-service provisioning of cloud-based CPU, memory, storage and networking.

そのために OpSource が提供するのは、彼らがいなければクラウド化できない、サインアップや、測定、課金、レポートに加えて、CPU および、メモリ、ストレージ、ネットワーキングなどを、自動的にクラウドへプロビジニングするための機能となる。

Small world, isn’t it.

それが、小さな世界だとは思えないのだ。

まだ規模は小さいようですが、右のチャートにあるように、OpSource はクラウド･プロバイダーとして、シッカリと認識されているようです。 それが、NTT グループの一員になるということは、日本の資本によるグローバル･クラウドが動き出すということであり、Agile_Cat としても楽しみが増えたわけです。それと、VCE と vBlock も面白そうな展開ですね。 そして、ここにも VMware の存在が見え隠れするようですが、同社のクリティカル･マーケットへのアプローチはスゴイですね。 ーーー
