Dell has partnered with enStratus, Canonical and Mirantis to bulk out the enterprise services available for its OpenStack-based private cloud.

The Round Rock, Texas-based company announced the Emerging Solutions Ecosystem partnership programme at the OpenStack Design Summit in San Francisco on Monday. The scheme sees Dell pair its OpenStack and Hadoop-base technologies with software modules and components from other companies to broaden the capabilities of its products without having to invest in research and development.

Texas の Round Rock をベースとする Dell は、月曜日に San Francisco で開催された OpenStack Design Summit において、Emerging Solutions Ecosystem パートナーシップ･プログラムを発表した。そのスキームは、R&D に投資することなくプロダクトの性能を強化するために、他社から提供されるソフトウェア･モジュールとコンポーネントにより、Dell が OpenStack と Hadoop を組み合わせていくものと思われる。

Initially, enStratus has worked with Dell to produce an OpenStack reference architecture that combines the open source infrastructure-as-a-service technology with enStratus’s cloud monitoring and management software.

Cloud Computing is gradually chipping away at on-premise infrastructure.   Slowly both small and large businesses are moving towards the cloud.   Small and medium sized businesses are finding it easy to adopt applications which they never were able to afford as on-premise applications.  And big companies are gradually piloting and  experimenting with moving some of their data in the cloud to become more efficient and flexible in their operations.  At this rate, enough chips and chinks will eventually be taken away from on-premise infrastructure that cloud computing will be considered the norm, rather than an exception.

クラウド･コンピューティングがオンプレミスのインフラを、少しずつ侵食している。中小企業とエンタープライスの双方が、クラウドへ向けて動きつつある。   中小企業においては、経済的な理由のために、オンプレミスでは購入できなかったアプリケーションの、容易な採用が実現するというメリットが見いだされている。  そしてエンタープライスでは、いくつかのデータをクラウドに移行し、運用上の効率と柔軟性を確認するための、テストや実験が徐々に進んでいる。  このペースで行くと、例外的と言うより一般的な現象として、大きな意味での経済性がオンプレミス･インフラから切り離され、クラウド･コンピューティングへと移行してしまうだろう。

Another data point was recently published by IBM and IDC recently which adds more evidence to the trend that companies’ in-house efforts to maintain data centers is struggling.  On-premise data centers aren’t keeping up with the level of efficiencies that cloud vendors are able to achieve.  The main difference, of course is focus.  Cloud vendors are in the data center business, while managing a data center is not a core competency for most other businesses.  IBM found that 79 percent of companies that maintain their own data centers felt that they are unable to keep current with the changes in technology (62 percent are running their operations at a mildly efficient level while 17 percent lack even basic efficiencies) .

The report found that of the 21 percent of companies that have built highly efficient data centers, more than 50 percent are able to allocate more of their IT budget on new projects and innovation.  Many of the efficiencies from these companies are possible using the latest virtualization and storage provisioning technologies.

また、このレポートでは、きわめて効率的なデータセンターを構築した 21% の企業についても注目しているが、そのうちの 50% 以上が、新しいプロジェクトとイノベーションのために、さらに多くの IT 予算を割り当てられるようになったと言っている。  なお、それらの企業における効率の大幅な改善は、最新の仮想化テクノロジーと、ストレージのプロビジョニング･テクノロジーから得られている。

For the 79 percent of companies that are falling behind in technology, the IBM report suggests the following course of action for how those companies could revamp their data centers:

• Optimize your existing hardware capacity and availability
• Make a plan consistent with your business objectives
• Ensure the plan is flexible enough to support changing objectives

Data center monitoring tools and cloud computing are frequently buzzed about in the industry today. Nimsoft, purchased last year by CA Technologies, is in the marketplace with “IT Management as a Service” or ITMaaS, which gives clients the ability to see into cloud-based applications as well as other mission critical applications.

“These are new environments, not built the way a traditional data center was built,” said Andy Kicklighter, Senior Principal Product Manager at Nimsoft.. “In a traditional environment, you had separate tools for email, databases, and so on. Those tools used their own resources. Now with virtualization and the cloud, the requirements are different.”

Nimsoft provides monitoring services and service desk solutions primarily to service providers, but enterprises are customers as well. The company’s services are used to find and solve issues in their own data center as well as private and public cloud environments. Nimsoft can be installed on premises, and there’s also a Software as a Service option.

“The monitoring services are designed to allow clients visibility into whatever they are using for cloud – Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure or Rackspace,” Kicklighter said. ”They also have connection capabilities to allow partners with specific expertise to also have access.”

Recently, Honda Motorcycle and Power Equipment of Austrailia announced it has deployed Nimsoft Monitor across its infrastructure. Nimsoft Monitor is a component of Nimsoft Unified Manager, a multi-tenant ITMaaS.

RightScale is adding OpenStack and SoftLayer to the list of cloud services that can be managed from its RightScale Cloud Management Platform.

The SoftLayer support is planned for the first quarter next year, and the OpenStack support will follow by the end of the first half, RightScale CEO and founder Michael Crandell said in an interview Thursday. That’s a conservative estimate, he added, meaning the OpenStack support could come sooner.

Each cloud platform has its own unique architecture, for example the way its storage systems are designed, so RightScale has to develop a version of its software for each cloud environment. Today it works with Amazon Web Services, Cloud.com, Rackspace, Eucalyptus, Japan’s IDC Frontier, and one or two others.

OpenStack is an open-source software platform, developed by Rackspace and NASA, and designed to enable service providers to architect their cloud services in a standard way, so that customers can move workloads among different clouds without being locked in.

Deployments are still at a very early stage but the software is backed by big names including Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Citrix Systems, Cisco Systems and Suse.

Forrester analyst James Staten compared OpenStack to enterprise Java a decade ago, in the sense that it provided a common core for building Java application servers, but each vendor’s implementation was unique, so Java apps were never quite portable as hoped.

One effect of OpenStack will be to make it easier for RightScale to adapt its product for many more cloud environments, because OpenStack clouds will share some basic similarities, even if service providers add extensions that make them not entirely interoperable.

But it will also make it easier for RightScale competitors such as CA and BMC Software, and smaller rivals such as Kaava and Abiquo, to compete.

"I think RightScale has a burden right now to try to move its road map forward as fast as possible and differentiate themselves, so they don’t get run over by some of the bigger players," Staten said.

Indeed, RightScale is working on several enhancements to its management platform. On the road map for 2012 are new automation features, including the ability to automate many of the tasks defined in the IT administrators’ "run book," which lists the procedures that are supposed to be followed when something goes wrong.

"This would be a layer above that and basically creating workflows," Crandell said.

If a database crashes, for instance, the software will be able to promote a slave to a master database, launch a new slave and begin the replication and backup procedure, all automatically, he said. Today, RightScale users have to trigger those steps manually.

One of the benefits of the cloud is that it lets people fire up and tear down servers easily, but once a virtual server is gone there’s often no record of who created it, how it was created and what it was used for.
