Microsoft’s Windows Azure Cloud Container

PDC 2009 で、Windows Azure 用のコンテナ･データセンターが展示されたとのことです。 30 秒ほどのものですが、すでに Youtube にアップされています。 これは、Microsoft の 第4世代モジュラー･データセンターであり、20フィート･タイプのようです。

Microsoft’s cloud container continues to evolve. The company has unveiled the next generation of its data center container at its Windows Professional Developers Conference, and it includes significant design advances over the existing containers deployed in Microsoft’s Chicago data center.

The 20-foot container on display at the PDC is an example of Microsoft’s Generation 4 Modular Data Center design, which abandons the raised-floor architecture that has been a staple of modern data center design in favor of a container-based model. Microsoft says the use of server-packed containers – known as Pre-Assembled Components (PACs) – will allow it to slash the cost of building its new data centers, which will have no roofs.

まずは、コンテナ 56台、4,500 m2 からスタート

この 10月の1日に、Data Center Knowledge が Microsoft Chicago を特集していたのですね。ちょうど出張中だったので、見落としていました。 以下に、5つのポストからの写真と概要を載せていきますので、詳細については個々のリンクをクリックしてください。

まず、正面玄関の写真です。 この建屋の中に 12,000-square-foot のサーバー･ルームが 4つあると書かれています。 56台のコンテナが第1フェーズとして設置され、同じだけのコンテナが第2フェーズとして収容されるとのことです。12,000-square-foot の広さですが、以下の計算となります。 これが4つですから、4,5000 m2 に近い面積となります。

1 ft2 ＝ 0.0929 m2
0.0929 * 12,000 = 1,114.8 m2
1,114.8 / 3.306 = 337.2051 坪

Power and Cooling Infrastructure

昨年の冬の段階の、建設中の水冷用タンクとのことです。まだ、700,000 square feet のスペースが、300,000 servers 用に空いているとのことです。そして、以下のインフラストラクチャを必要とすると書いてあります。

• 11 diesel generators, each supplying 2.8 megawatts of power
• 11 electrical substations and power rooms
• 12 chillers, each with a capacity of 1,260 tons

1 ft2 ＝ 0.0929 m2
0.0929 * 70,000 = 6,503.0 m2
6,503 / 3.306 = 1,967.0296 坪

このコンテナには、2000台以上のサーバー･マシンが収納され、Microsoft Live online services を駆動するのに必要な密度を達成しているとのことです。 この写真は、“side aisle” 型という、側廊スタイルのものとのことです。

Microsoft Chicago: Center-Aisle Container

こちらは、中廊スタイルのコンテナとのことです。側廊スタイルと比べて、どちらが効率が良いのか、実際に運用してみて、その辺りを見極めようという目論見でしょうか？ なお、こうしたコンテナのことを “Pre-Assembled Components”、つまり PAC と呼ぶみたいです。

こちらは、コンテナの搬入風景です。 この Chicago データセンターの構築費用は、$500 million とのことですので、500 億円弱という計算になります。 ただし、フェーズ1 の費用なのか、フェーズ 2 を含めた費用なのか、その辺りはわかりません。

Microsoft Unveils Its Container-Powered Cloud

Microsoft が新設する Chicago データセンターに、40フィート･コンテナが搬入された模様です。この新しい 60トン･コンテナの設置は、わずか 4人の作業員により、約 8時間の作業で完了したそうで、そこには、空水冷ダクトの接続や、電源とネットワークの接続も含まれるとのことです。

1台のコンテナに配置されるサーバー数は 2000台とのことですから、Google 第一世代の 1000 台より、さらに集積度が上がったことになります。 だたし、HP の ２U コンテナの 3500 台には満たないようです。 第1フェーズでは56台のコンテナが設置され、最終的には 112台のコンテナ、つまり 224,000 台のサーバーが配置されることになるそうです。

共有電力量は 30MW （第1フェーズ？）で、そのうちの 20MW がコンテナ･エリアに共有されるとのことです。

Microsoft の Dublin は、データセンターにおけるマイルストーンである。この新しい設備は、Microsoft のクラウド･コンピューティングにパワーを提供するが、同じくらいの規模を持つデータセンターと比べて、そこで消費される電力と冷却水は、低く抑えられている。

Microsoft の発表によると、その PUE（Power Usage Effectiveness） は 1.25 であり、業界全体の平均値である 2.0、そして 同社の平均値である 1.6 を大きく下回る。

Microsoft’s Chiller-less Data Center

今日 9月24日にオープンされる Microsoft Dublin データセンターの空調設備

Microsoft は Google と並んで、冷却レスの低電力データセンターのフロント･ランナーになる。同社の “Live” オンライン･スイートをヨーロッパ／中東／アフリカに提供するサーバー群を、外気で冷やすことになる。

また、サーバー･ルームの気温は 35度であり、従来からの20度前後と比べて高温になる。この外気と水を用いた冷却により、消費電力とコストが大幅に抑えられる。 同様の構造を持ったデータセンターは、この 7月に Google により、ベルギーにも構築されている。

Azure Datacenter を D&D する Microsoft ?

データセンターを Drag & Drop する時代になったという ・・・

アメリカにおける州税制が変わったらしく、北西部であるワシントン州、つまり Quincy に配置された Azure データセンターが、テキサス州の San Antonio に移動するようです。

もともとの税法はわかりませんが、新たなデータセンターを稼動する際には、7.9% という税率が発生するようで、11月の Azure サービスインまでに引越しが必要になったとのことです。

前職では Microsoft データセンターの総責任者を担っていた、Digital Realty Trust の Mike Manos によると、、、

The cloud must be mobile, and able to relocate if necessary.
And it can be, as Microsoft illustrated this week.

、、、だそうです。 また、これからは、ネズミとネコの追っかけっこが始まるとも言っています。

それを評して Information Week では、データセンターはフォルダのようなものとなり、法律の変化に応じて、それを Drag & Drop する時代になったか。。。

Migrating from “USA – Northwest”

Windows Azure offers users the option of choosing the geographic region in which their application runs.  During our current Community Technology Preview (CTP), the options available to users are “USA – Northwest,” “USA – Southwest,” and “USA – Anywhere.”  This list will grow as we expand into more geographies.

In the next few weeks, we’re going to disable the “USA – Northwest” option for new applications.  Existing applications will continue to run unaffected, and you’ll continue to be able to modify and update your existing applications.

肝いりではじめた Geo－Location も、 “USA – Northwest” を止めなければならないようで、水を差された感じですね。

Chicago ：

当初は 30MW で、60MWまで拡張
設備の 2/3 がコンテナ型になる
1台のコンテナのサーバー集積度は、1800～2500台
PUE は 1.22（Google の1.25を超える？）

Dublin ：

当初は 5MW で、22MWまで拡張
現時点では、コンテナ型は含まれない

・・・とのこと。

 

MS が シカゴのデータセンターを買収？

Report: Microsoft to Buy Chicago Site for $185M

たしか、$500 million というウワサでしたが、$185 million にコストダウンなのでしょうか？ ただし、40フィート･コンテナ計画は健在のようで、この施設に配置するのでしょうか？ 40万台のサーバーということは、1000台／コンテナとして、400個コンテナが配置される計算になりますね。

It looks like Microsoft will buy its Chicago data center facility from the developers. Crain’s is reporting that Microsoft will pay $185 million to acquire the property from Ascent Corp and the Koman Group. The company will say only that it “doesn’t comment on rumors or speculation.”

The massive Chicago facility is the cornerstone of Microsoft’s plans to build an enormous cloud computing infrastructure with servers housed in 40-foot shipping containers. The company plans to house up to 400,000 servers in the enormous data center to power its Live suite of online services.

MS データセンター戦略に遅れが？

Microsoft の GFS、どうなる？

世界的な不況の波を受けてでしょうか、Global Foundation Services で大規模なレイオフが有ったようです。 Data Center Knowledge によると、全体で 3000人、シアトル･エリアで 1200 人が職を失ったとされています。

1 月に横浜で開催された TechDays のオープニングで、コンテナ型のデータセンターが構築されていく様を示す、イメージ･ビデオが上映されていましたが、この革新的なコンセプトに狂いが生じているのでしょうか？ Iowa や、Chicago、Dublin などの計画も遅れているようです。

昨年の12月に、James Hamilton 氏が去り、4 月には Michael Manos 氏が退職してしまったようです。さぁ、これから S+S と Azure で、、、 というタイミングですが、どう考えても、この二人が次世代データセンターの推進者であり、なにかチグハグさを感じてしまいます。
