Taiwan-based supply chain makers claim Google is launching Android 5.0 in 2Q12. Too funny.

Earlier this week, Motorola said that the delay in launching Android 4.0 mainly rests on Google’s shoulders, as the company developed the platform based around one hardware set and is currently writing code that will make Ice Cream Sandwich edible on all hardware configurations. Motorola also released its upgrade schedule on Wednesday, clearly showing why devices have yet to receive the v4.0 upgrade.

According to the sources, Android 5.0 will be further optimized for tablets while also integrating Chrome system functions. This means Google plans to push for dual-operating system designs on Windows 8 devices. Vendors can either choose to use Android 5.0 solely on the device, or pack it with Windows 8 and provide the means to switch between the two operating systems without the need to reboot.

その情報源によると、Android 5.0 はタブレットに最適化されるだけではなく、Chrome System Function も統合するようだ。つまり、Google の目論見は、Windows 8 対応のデバイスに、デュアル･オペレーティング･システムを押しこもうというものだ。それぞれのベンダーは、対象デバイス用に Android 5.0 だけを選ぶことも、Windows 8 と組み合わせることも可能になる。そして、後者の場合は、リブートすることなく、2つのオペレーティング･システムを切り替えられる。

What’s likely the case is that Android 5.0 "Jelly Bean" is actually a new version of ChromeOS, not Android. It may be a long time before we see the next version of Android released given Google’s developmental track record with the mobile OS.

おそらく Android 5.0 "Jelly Bean" は Android 用ではなく、ChromeOS の新しいバージョンであるというのが、今回のケースだろう。Google におけるモバイル OS の、開発トラック･レコードという条件のもとでリリースされる、Android の次期バージョンを見るのは、まだ先のことだろう。

たしか、HTC では Ice Cream Sandwich への移行が順調に進んでいるけど、Motorola は難航しているという、情報が流れていたように記憶しています。このバージョンで、スマートフォンとタブレットが統合されるとも聞いていますが、気になるのは、そのタイミングです。 ARM on Windows 8 が出てくると、当然の事として、Android と iPad の両陣営で緊張感が高まります。今年は、そのような意味で、タブレットの年になるのかもしれませんね。ーーー
