Hands-on with the TouchPal keyboard for Android tablets

CooTek been’s making keyboards for several years now and its experience in this field shows. The company has a popular Android keyboard in the Android Market and recently released a tablet-optimized version. I’ve been playing around with the tablet version on a 7-inch Acer Iconia tablet and must say that the keyboard alternative is fantastic.

この何年かの間に、CooTek はいくつかのキーボードを開発しており、そのフィールドにおけるエクスペリエンスを示している。同社は、人気のキーボードを Android Market にも提供しているが、先日にはタブレットに最適化されたバージョンも発表している。私は、そのタブレット･バージョンを 7 inch の Acer Iconia タブレットで使っているが、この選択肢の素晴らしさについて、説明しなければならないだろう。

What I like most about the keyboard is its flexibility. There are five different keyboard layouts in landscape mode including Split Layout, Full Layout, Center Layout, Left Layout and Right Layout. The software also includes Curve, which lets you enter words by swiping. On a tablet, the landscape keyboard is spacious and provides easy access to frequently used characters like the comma and period. Letters are easy to tap, and you can’t miss the auto correct words at the top of the keyboard. If you use the split keyboard, there’s a handy set of text selection keys that’ll let you highlight a piece of text and copy/paste it. TouchPal also accepts voice input using Google’s underlying engine.

このキーボードで、最も気に入っていのは、その柔軟性である。つまり、横置きモードでは、Split Layout／Full Layout／Center Layout／Left Layout／Right Layout といった、5種類のキーボード･レイアウトを利用できる。さらに、このソフトウェアは、キーボード上の Swipe（指でなぞる動き）で単語を入力する、Curve という機能を取り込んでいる。横置きのタブレットでは、キーボードに広い領域が割り振られるため、カンマやピリオドなどへのアクセスも容易である。それぞれの文字は入力し易い。また、キーボードのトップにオートコレクトされた単語が表示されるため、タイプミスも無くなる。左右にスプリットされたキーボードを使う場合には、テキストの強調表示とコピー／ペーストを容易にするための、テキスト･セレクション･キーのセットが有効である。 TouchPal は、Google が基礎を提供するエンジンを用いて、音声入力を受け付けることも可能だ。

Portrait mode has less flexibility than the landscape keyboard, mainly because you don’t have the space to move the keyboard around the screen. Despite this limitation, TouchPal does a superb job with its single keyboard. The keyboard accepts tap, swipe and voice input. You can easily toggle between the letter keyboard and the text selector keyboard. There’s also your standard numeric keyboard that’s only one tap away.

縦置きにすると、その柔軟性が減じてしまうが、その理由は、キーボードのためのスペースが狭くなる点にある。しかし、こうした制約にもかかわらず、TouchPal はシングル･キーボードとして素晴らしく機能する。つまり、タップと Swipe と音声による入力に対応している。そして、通常のテキスト入力のモードと、テキスト選択のモードを、容易に行き来できる。また、標準的な数字キーも提供されるが、タップだけに対応するものとなる。

TouchPal is available for free from the Android Market and supports a variety of languages. If you’ve never used it, check it out; you don’t have anything to lose. Who knows, you may discover that you like it better than SlideIT, SwiftKey X or Swype, which may cost money and lack a dedicated tablet version.

TouchPal は Android Market で無償提供され、各種の言語をサポートする。まだ、使っていないなら、チェックすべきである。失うものは何もなのだから。誰もが知っている SlideIT／SwiftKey X／Swype よりも、TouchPal の方が優れていると気づくだろう。しかも、それらは有償であり、タブレットに特化したバージョンを提供していないのだ。

Agile_Cat は、まだ、試していないので日本語でどうなるのか、まったく分かりませんが、なかなか斬新な発想のキーボードであることは確かなようです。なんといっても、タッチ･デバイスの泣き所は文字入力であり、このカベを突破できれば、さらなる可能性が開けてきます。期待したいですね！ーーー __AC Stamp 2
