Apple Sets Steve Jobs Memorial for Sunday

Apple Inc. has invited some of Silicon Valley’s biggest names to a memorial service for Steve Jobs Sunday, Oct. 16, according to a copy of the invitation and several invitees.

招待状のコピーと、何人かの招待客の話によると、 Apple は10月16日（日）に、 Steve Jobs の告別式を行い、Silicon Valley のビッグ･ネームたちを招くらしい。

The event will be held at Stanford University’s campus Sunday evening, according to the invitation. It follows a small private funeral held for the Apple co-founder last week.

その招待状によると、この葬儀は日曜日の夜に、Stanford University のキャンパスで執り行われることになる。それは、先週に行われた、この Apple Co-Founder のための、内輪の葬儀に続くものとなる。

The memorial is expected to be attended by Silicon Valley luminaries and others close to Mr. Jobs, said the invitees.

そして、16日の葬儀には、Mr. Jobs と親しかった Silicon Valley の有名人たちが出席することになると、招待客からの話があった。

An Apple spokesman said the Sunday event is a private service.

Apple のスポークスマンによると、この日曜日の葬儀はプライベートなものであるという。

Guests to the invitation-only service were asked to respond to Emerson Collective, a philanthropic organization established by Laurene Powell Jobs, Mr. Jobs’s wife.

招待された者だけの葬儀であり、Mr. Jobs の妻である Laurene Powell Jobs が設立した、慈善団体 Emerson Collective に、参加者は返信しているとのことだ。

As previously reported, Apple also plans to host an event for Apple employees to celebrate Mr. Jobs’s life at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., on Oct. 19.

以前にもレポートしたように、Apple も従業員を招いての葬儀を、10月19日に Cupertino, Calif の本社で計画しており、Mr. Jobs を偲ぶという。

Mr. Jobs died Oct. 5 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mr. Jobs は、すい臓癌との長い戦いの末、10月5日に、この世を去った。

At yesterday’s Kindle presentation, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos gave special attention to all the people in the media who were calling for a $99 Kindle.

昨日 (9/28) に開催された Kindle のプレゼンテーションにおいて、 Amazon CEO である Jeff Bezos は、＄99 Kindle を歓迎する全てのメディアに対して、特別な注意を与えた。

He noted that pundits said a $99 Kindle would send people into a "fervor". Then Bezos whipped out a $99 Kindle Touch and said the "fervor" for cheap Kindles could begin.

そして彼は、＄99 の Kindle が人々に熱気を送り届けるという、評論家たちの発言を紹介した。続いて、$99 Kindle Touch を取り出し、安価な Kindle が火付け役になると発言した。

A few minutes later, (oddly) with less excitement, Bezos revealed a $79 Kindle. Considering the Kindle started at $399 four years ago, these are very impressive price cuts.

さらに数分後、（奇妙なことに）Bezos は冷静に、$79 の Kindle を披露した。4年前に、Kindle が $399 から始まったことを考えると、実に素晴らしい価格の引き下げである。

We’ll start the next round of questions from the pundits to Bezos: When will the Kindle be free? When will Amazon’s special offers, and Prime program make it cheap enough for Amazon to give away Kindles? Next year? The year after that?

そして、私たち、つまり評論家たちから、Bezos への質問タイムへと移行した。いつになったら、Kindle はタダになるのか？いつになったら、Amazon はスペシャル･オファーを提供するのか？ Prime プログラムにより、Kindke はタダ同然になるのか？来年？それとも再来年？

なんというか、このグラフを見る限り、やがて Kindle はタダになりますね。それにしても、お見事と、ただただ褒めるしかない、素晴らしいビジネスを展開している Amazon です。それと、この記事を訳していて気づきましたが、Kindle Touch というのもあるのですね。しかも、この値段ですから、こちらも驚きです。 Kindle 2 （その頃は日本語フォント･パッチが必要でした）を子供にあげてしまった Agile_Cat ですが、$99 の Touch を見て、また、欲しくなってしまいましたーーー
