Agile_Cat が知ったのは、9月22日の早朝というか夜中というか、、、ですが、ついに、ソフトバンクモバイルによる iPhone の独占販売が崩れ、この 11月からは KDDI も販売を開始するとのニュースが流れていました。2008年にソフトバンクが、Apple と独占販売契約を交わして以来の 1社独占体制が崩れ、iPhone ユーザーにキャリアを選ぶというオプションが提供されたわけです。
日本での iPhone 販売数は、2009年 3月期に 70万台、2010年 3月期に 150万台、そして、2011年 3月期には 320万台と伸びており、また、今年 9月末時点での累計は 750万台程度とのことで、たいへんなビッグ・ビジネスというわけです。 日本に先立ちアメリカも、これまでの AT&T 独占体制が崩れ、いまは Verizon も iPhone を販売するようになりましたが、今回の日本での出来事も、大きなニュースとして取り扱われています。 まぁ、それだけオオゴトだということなのでしょう。

Come November, visitors and residents alike will stand a far better chance of being able to actually use their iPhones in Japan if the latest solid rumor about a second network picking up the Apple smartphone proves true. According to the “Nikkei Business” magazine — not an organ that deals in tittle-tattle — the iPhone 5 will finally be freed from the bonds of the much-derided Softbank network and make the leap to KDDI’s au-brand, giving it a second carrier in Japan.

Japanese carrier KDDI will break up rival Softbank’s exclusive hold on Apple’s iPhone in the country early next year, when it will reportedly begin selling the iPhone 5. Local business newspaper The Nikkei said on Thursday it had learned that the company will offer Apple’s next-generation iPhone through its "au" service in the first quarter of 2012. The report noted that Apple plans to released the device worldwide in "mid-October," adding that KDDI will begin selling the device next year because "it will take time for preparations. The carrier’s flat rate for iPhone data services is said to cost 4000 yen ($52), roughly comparable to Softbank’s pricing.

KDDI Corp, Japan’s second-largest mobile carrier by subscribers, has snagged the rights to sell Apple’s iPhone 5, according to a report, in a blow to its rival Softbank. Threatening the market dominance enjoyed by Softbank as Apple’s only partner in Japan, the US computer giant and KDDI have already agreed on a sales deal for the highly-anticipated phone, the Nikkei business newspaper reported in its online edition on Thursday, citing unnamed sources. But KDDI will need a few months to prepare for the roll-out of iPhone 5 and will not be ready in October when Apple is expected to launch the new model around the world — including in Japan through Softbank, the report said.

Softbank Corp.’s shares plunged 11% Thursday after a report said that KDDI Corp. has broken its exclusive grip on iPhone products, snagging the right to also sell Apple Inc.’s coming iPhone5 in Japan. In a blow for the Japanese cell phone carrier’s rival, Apple and KDDI have already entered into a sales pact for the new phone, Nikkei Business said, citing sources close to the matter. The report said KDDI was making preparations to sell the iPhone5, which is expected to be released in October, at its au shops throughout the country starting around November.

Sept. 22 (Bloomberg) — Softbank Corp., the sole iPhone seller in Japan, fell the most in almost three years after a magazine reported bigger rival KDDI Corp. will offer Apple Inc.’s newest version of the smartphone. Softbank fell as much as 11.6 percent, the biggest intraday decline since Nov. 18, 2008, to 2,300 yen before trading at 2,327 yen as of the 11 a.m. break on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. KDDI, Japan’s second-largest mobile-phone operator, advanced as much as 6.2 percent, the most since March 16.
