AST Modular recently helped a data center customer in Sydney, Australia expand its capacity with a double-decker containerized solution that added 17 racks cooled by outside air. The installation featured one 40-foot container filled with racks of servers, supported by AST’s Modular Natural Free Cooling Technology, a cooling module that sits atop the IT container.

AST says the unit achieves an actual metered Power Usage Effectiveness of 1.09. The climate in Sydney allows the customer to use indirect airside economizers (free cooling) for 92 percent of the year. The system is controlled by management software that can switch between several modes of cooling: 100 percent free cooling at temperatures below 19° C (66 degrees F), partial economization with the use of adiabatic cooling, or mechanical cooling for temperatures approximately above 26° C (78 degrees F). This video provides an overview of AST’s Natural Free Cooling design, with illustrations of airflow and the air-to-air heat exchanger. It runs about 5 minutes, 30 seconds.

Computerworld – Even though Google+ has made a huge splash in the social networking world, rivals Facebook and Twitter continue to grow at dramatic rates.

Facebook had more than 162 million unique visitors to its site in July, according to comScore, an online traffic tracker. That’s an 11% increase from July 2010. And while Facebook had a good July, Twitter and LinkedIn also showed strong gains.

Twitter saw a 32% increase year over year, with close to 33 million unique visitors last month, according to comScore. And LinkedIn had a 45% increase, with just over 32 million unique visitors. With just over 13 million unique visitors, Tumblr, a blogging platform, didn’t match the traffic of the other sites, but it did show whopping growth of 218%.

Things weren’t so rosy for MySpace, a once-successful social networking pioneer whose best days seem to be behind it. According to comScore, MySpace experienced a 45% drop in unique visitors, falling from nearly 61 million in July 2010 to just a bit more than 33 million last month.

ComScore didn’t report on the status of Google+ for July, but it will probably start tracking Google‘s new social network by next month, said Andrew Lipsman, comScore’s vice president of industry analysis. Earlier this month, comScore reported that Google+ had amassed 25 million users in just a little more than a month since its beta launch. Despite its initial success, Google+ doesn’t seem to be cutting into its rivals’ growth.

So, could Google+’s growth start to eat into other network’s user bases? Possibly. "It is simply too early to tell how Google+ will affect the social media landscape," said Lipsman. "Social networking is still a growing category, which means that new players have the opportunity to stake out a position in the market and capture some of that growth."

He also noted that Twitter showed some interesting growth segments. The microblogging site gained a lot of new users from two ends of the demographic spectrum — teenagers and people over 55.

EU 法廷の Apple – Samsung 対決で、Galaxy は自由を得たのか？

Summary: Starting October, which is also the rumored release month of the iPhone 5, some Samsung Galaxy phones with Android are banned in Netherlands affecting supply chain in Europe. Coincidence?

Multiple websites have reported that a court in The Hague has ordered Samsung to stop shipping three of its devices, the Samsung Galaxy S II, the Samsung Galaxy Ace and the original Galaxy S (first-gen), the grant in favor of Apple inc will start on October 15 according to multiple reports, while WSJ claims the date is October 13th.

多数の Web サイトが報じたのは、オランダの Hague の法廷が、Samsung の 3種類のデバイスである、Galaxy S II と、Galaxy Ace、そしてオリジナルの Galaxy S（1st-gen）の出荷停止を命じたという事実である。この Apple の側に立つ裁定は、多数のレポートによると 10月15日から施行されるとなっているが、WSJ は 10月13日からだと主張している。

The Dutch court ruled that Korean-based company Samsung and its subsidiaries violated Apple’s patent on the method of scrolling in the touchscreen, and the implementation of the photo gallery of the noted Samsung phones, and the court thinks Samsung infringed the patent of Apple’s iOS native photo application. However, the court rejected the remaining suits including those mentioning design and style. Reports have added that the court order will affect Samsung’s supply chain in Europe because it go through the Netherlands.

Surprisingly, Samsung’s only escape is Android’s “3.0″ upgrade, that should update the scrolling in UI and the photo application, and the judge handling the case reportedly noted Samsung’s motion elaborating the Android software update. Apparently, Samsung Galaxy S2 or S II is included in the ban, so it is quite possible that this development will help Apple in its rumored upcoming smartphone, the iPhone 5 that may arrive in October claim new reports.

Samsung Galaxy S II is considered as one of the biggest competitors of the rumored new iPhone. In fact, the device powered by Google Android became Samsung’s biggest selling smartphone to date, with 3 million units shipped in less than 2 months, or 55 days to be exact. Samsung Galaxy S II is expected to arrive in USA next month, and the company is poised to officially announce the device by the end of August.

これが、一連の訴訟における判例となるなら、Android 陣営にとっては大きな前進となるのでしょうね。昨日あたりから、Samsung と LG を韓国政府が支援し自前の OS を作るというウワサや、Samsung が HP の PC 部門（WebOS も?）を買収するというウワサが流れています。 Samsung としては、Android がほんとうにダメ（法的に）なら、さっさと諦めて、次の OS を考えようという考えかもしれません。なにやら、今回の裁判では、『2001年宇宙の旅』を証拠として提出し、タッチパッドが Apple のアイデアであるはずがないと、論陣を張ったとか。。。 なんというか、ものすごい戦いになってきましたね。 ーーー

SoftLayer Goes Global With its Network

Web hosting giant SoftLayer is expanding its infrastructure to Europe and Asia, with plans for network points of presence on both continents and a new data center in Singapore.  The new PoPs will be located in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Moscow, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Web ホスティングの巨人である SoftLayer は、Europe と Asia にネットワーク PoP ( point-of-presence) を設置し、Singapore に新データセンターを構築することで、両大陸へ向けたインフラストラクチャの拡大を推進している。それらの新しい PoP は、London および、Paris、Frankfurt、Moscow、Tokyo、Hong Kong に配置されるだろう。

SoftLayer Chief Strategy Officer George Karidis said the network expansion reflects the global nature of the company’s customer base. “Today more 40% of our customers reside outside the United States of America, and we reach those customers via more than 2,000 Gbps of network connectivity from transit and peering relationships with other networks around the world, and we’ve been successful,” Karidis writes on the InnerLayer blog. “If the Internet is flattening the world, a USA-centric infrastructure may be limiting, though.”

Expanding With Digital Realty

Last November, after completing its acquisition of The Planet, SoftLayer said it has leased two PODs in a Digital Realty Trust data center in Amsterdam, representing about 2.25 megawatts of power. The company also leased space in a Digital Realty Trust facility in Silicon Valley.

“Each of the points of presence we add in Asia and Europe effectively wrap our 40ms ring around millions of users that may have previously relied on several hops on several providers to get to the SoftLayer network, and as a result, we’re able to power a faster and more consistent network experience for those users,” Karidis said. “As SoftLayer grows, our goal is to maintain the quality of service our customers expect while we extend the availability of that service quality to users around the globe.”

The network growth continues an active expansion of infrastructure and services for SoftLayer, which added managed services offerings earlier this year. The company has more than 26,000 cutomers and had $78 million in revenue in the first quarter of 2011, its first full quarter of operations since merging with The Planet.
