この、ソーシャル･メディアの勢いに支えられた革命は、エジプト系アメリカンとして矢面に立ち、抗議活動を推進してきた１人の男が喜びをポストした昨日、Twitter 上の声となり世界を駆け巡った。

Google のマーケティング･マネージャーであり、当局に逮捕された後に抗議運動の顔になった Wael Ghonim は、自身の誇りと喜びについてツイートした。

『 彼らは私たちに、ほんとうのエジプトは 30年前に死んでしまったと、嘘をつき続けてきた。しかし、何 100 万というエジプト人は、失われた祖国を探し出そうと決め、わずか 18日間で見つけ出したのだ 』と、彼は Twitter に書き込んだ。

The revolution that drew momentum from social media was the talk of Twitter yesterday as Egyptian-Americans, celebrities and protest organizers posted congratulations.

Wael Ghonim, the Google marketing manager who became one face of the protest movement after his arrest, tweeted his pride and joy.

"They lied at us, told us Egypt died 30 years ago, but millions of Egyptians decided to search and they found their country in 18 days," he wrote on Twitter.

New York City に居を構える、デジタル･ストラテジストの Constance DeCherney は、ソーシャル･メディアが今回の革命の原動力だと発言している。

『 現実に、エジプトの市民に発言する場が提供された。 ソーシャル･メディアの素晴らしさは、多くの人々が発する声を一度に集め、合意を形成する能力にある。 そして、それは瞬間的に行われる 』 と、彼女は言う。

さらに、Facebook と Twitter は、エジプト以外の国々に対しても、国際社会を形成するためのチャンスを与えたと、DeCherney は続ける。

『 それは、権力者にとって不快だろうが、 彼らが築き上げた構造を、超越するものなのだ 』と、彼女は発言している。

30歳になる Ghonim は、『 自分の国での反乱が心配な独裁者たちは、Facebook を見て、怖れるがいい。 私は、いつか Mark Zuckerberg に会い、心からお礼を言いたい 』と、発言している。

Constance DeCherney, a digital strategist based in New York City, said social media was a driving force in the revolution.

"It really gave a voice to the citizens of Egypt," she said. "The beauty of social media is the ability to coordinate many people at one time. It’s instantaneous."

DeCherney said Facebook and Twitter also gave non-Egyptians a chance to create an international community of support.

"It’s uncomfortable for people in high-power positions," she said. "It transcends the power borders."

Ghonim, 30, said if the world’s dictators want to know if an uprising is afoot in their countries, they should "look to Facebook." 

"I want to meet Mark Zuckerberg one day and thank him, actually," he said.

放っておくと、どこかに集まってしまう富と権力も、ソーシャル･メディアが発達すると、うまく分散するのかも知れませんね。 そんな希望を抱かせてくれる、今回のエジプトです。 もう、Facebook には、ユーザーを対象に 一口 $10 株主みたいな、ドラスティックな資金調達を考えて欲しいです。 これだけの力を持つソーシャル･ネットワークの中立性が、次のテーマになりそうな予感。 ーーー
