OpenStack cloud platform to get Microsoft Hyper-V integration

The OpenStack project — an open-source cloud-computing platform created by RackSpace, NASA and a growing list of partners — is getting some support from Microsoft.

Microsoft officials said on October 22 that they are partnering with Cloud.com to provide “integration and support” for Windows Server 2008 R2’s Hyper-V hypervisor with OpenStack. Cloud.com is one of the current OpenStack contributors and participants.

Microsoft における10月22日のオフィシャルなコメントによると、Windows Server 2008 R2 HyperｰV の、OpenStack へのインテグレーションとサポートを提供するために、Cloud.com とのパートナーシップを進めている。 Cloud.com は、OpenStack に参加し、貢献している企業である。

The arrangement is similar to other interoperability-focused partnerships Microsoft has done in the past to add Java, PHP and Eclipse support for Microsoft’s own Windows Azure platform, via which Microsoft provides architectural and technical guidance (and in some cases, money) and the partner does the code development. Microsoft officials said that once Cloud.com develops the supporting code, that code will be made available at http://openstack.org.

今回の合意は、 Windows Azure プラットフォームで Java／PHP／Eclipse などをサポートするために、これまでに Microsoft がインターオペラビリティを重視してきた、パートナーシップに類似しているそこでは、Microsoft がアーキテクチャおよびテクニカルに関するガイダンス（資金の場合もある）を提供することで、対象となるパートナーたちがコード開発をする。 Microsoft のオフィシャル･コメントによると、Cloud.com がサポートのためのコードを開発した後に、それらを http://openstack.org から提供する。

The OpenStack platform already includes virtualization technology. The code that is under development by Cloud.com will enable the OpenStack platform to integrate with Microsoft’s own server/virtualization products.

The OpenStack project announced its new “Austin” release of its Compute and Storage platforms on October 21. That release added support for the Xen, KVM, QEMU, User Mode Linux Support in the hypervisor space.

Rackspace has made Windows and Visual Studio integration technologies available to customers of its own cloud platform.

Rackspace は自身のクラウド･プラットフォーム上に、Windows および Visual Studio を統合するためのテクノロジーを、すでに顧客に提供している。

Facebook 映画『 The Social Network 』の感想ブログをご紹介します

映画『 The Social Network (ソーシャルネットワーク) 』観てきました

とても面白い、映画『 The Social Network 』の感想が、吉平健治さんのブログ『珪素の唇』に掲載されているので、ご紹介したいと思います。吉平さんはアメリカ在住の Twitter 仲間でして、お会いしたことはないのですが、この映画に関するポストを教えていただくことになりました。まず拝見して、Mark Zuckerberg が学生時代を過ごした東海岸にお住まいで、しかも難しそうな本を何冊も出されている方なのだと知りました。

そんな吉平さんの映画評ですから、いわゆる東部エスタブリッシュメントの世界をよくご存知という、Mark Zuckerberg の傍若無人ぶりの背景まで見抜いた視点から書かれており、読めば読むほど、日本での 1月 (?) の封切りが楽しみになってきます。この映画を吉平さんがご覧になったのは、プリンストン大学の目の前の小さな映画館であり、また、同大学の IT 部門で働いている友人とご一緒だったということです。なんというか、『 The Social Network 』を観るのに、これ以上のシチュエーションはあり得ませんよね。

このポストの目的は、吉平さんの映画評と文化に触れていただくための誘導ですので、その文中に書かれている見出しだけをご紹介します。

New York City Gets on Microsoft’s Cloud

A plan that claims to save New York City $50 million over the next 5 years was announced today in the joint effort of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and NYC Mayor Bloomberg. Microsoft will do the city’s cloud computing, powering all of the city’s computer resources, software and information.

New York City の財政を、今後の 5年間にわたって $50 million ほど軽減するという計画が、Microsoft CEO である Steve Ballmer と NYC 市長である Mayor Bloomberg から、今日（10/20）、共同で発表された。 Microsoft は、NY 市のクラウド･コンピューティング化を担い、そのコンピュータ･リソース／ソフトウェア／情報の全てを強化していく。

Mayor Bloomberg signed a new executive order, initiating a new agency that will manage the city’s information technology sector, calling it the Department of Information and Technology or DoITT. Different agencies individually handling their IT and software licensing would be wasteful, citing a hypothetical situation of how inefficient it is to have each of the Department of Education’s buildings individually handle their plumbing needs. Microsoft will serve all of the city’s computer need from servers, storage and licensing. From Mayor Bloomberg:

New York City gave cloud computing a warm welcome, and it’s a big opportunity for Microsoft. The cloud initiatives Microsoft is pushing got a major kick start with yesterday’s announcement of Office 365. This is yet another way Microsoft is seeking gains in an area Google has hoped to dominate. Both Microsoft and Google are going after city organizations to increase their government contracts, and with this deal Microsoft has landed a big fish.

New York City はクラウド･コンピューティングを歓迎し、また、Microsoft に大きなチャンスを提供した。クラウドをリードしてきた Microsoft が、昨日の公表したOffice 365 は、最高のスタートを得ることになる。それは、Google が支配を望んでいるエリアで、Microsoft が目論んでいる新しい戦略である。複数の行政組織が契約を増やし始めてからというもの、Microsoft と Google はこのビジネスを追い求めており、今回は Microsoft が大魚を釣り上げることになった。

Facebook のトラフィックが急増 – 4ヶ月で 14% の伸び

comScore : 2010年の5月と9月のデータを比較してみました

おなじみの comScore ですが、Media Metrix Ranks Top 50 U.S. Web Properties for September 2010 というタイトルのレポートが出ていたので、同じく May 2010 のレポートと比較してみました。注目の Top-5 ですが、その順位には変動のないものの、4位の Facebook の急伸ぶりが目を引きます。 Yahoo! も約 6% という伸びを示していますが、Facebook の場合は約 14% という成長率になっています。

この伸び率が、5月から9月という 4ヶ月間の変動だということを考えると、その勢いのスゴさが感じられます。このままの勢いを維持するとすれば、あっという間に Microsoft、Yahoo!、Google をごぼう抜きしてダントツのトップになってしまうでしょう。それと、以前にも書きましたが、Facebook の特徴は、そのサイトでの滞在時間の長さだと言われています。この要因を加味すると、すでに No.1 サイトだと言っても過言ではないでしょう。

Google Search に独占される iPhone で、Apple は打開策を見いだせるのか？

Google Dominates Mobile Searches on the iPhone

Google holds both the number 1 and number 2 slot in a ranking of search engines on the iPhone, accounting for an estimated 97 percent of all searches, according to figures from ad network Chitika. The firm looked at search volume on the iPhone and found that Google has search pretty much locked up, with 49.08 percent of searches coming through the Safari tool bar, 42.24 percent coming from its home page and other minor sources and 8.68 percent from its dedicated Google app. If you count the app and the regular search as two sources, Google has both of the top two search engines on the iPhone.

The numbers aren’t completely accurate with respect to Bing, which is hard to track because it doesn’t offer referral URLs. But Chitika estimates that Bing searches through its app, its home page and through its access to the Safari tool bar represent anywhere from 1-4 percent of searches on the iPhone.

ただし、ここで用いられている値は、Bing が照会 URL を提供しないため、その点において精度が低いかもしれない。しかし、アプリケーションやホームページを介した Bing による検索と、Safari ツールバーからのアクセスを加えても、全体の 1~ 4 % 程度だと、Chitika では見積もっている。

This suggests that Yahoo and Microsoft are have having a tough time dislodging Google from its top spot or even attaining their current success in desktop searches. And with mobile searches only expected to grow, it also supports Google’smove to launch Google Instant on phones soon, giving the company yet another edge in facilitating mobile searches. It also points up how valuable the toolbar search engine is. Greg Sterling at Search Engine Land said less than 20 percent of searches happen through a PC tool bar.

Apple has said it’s not interested in being a search provider, despite some speculation that its purchase of Siri could put help provide that. It’ll be interesting to see if Apple ever looks to play a bigger role in search, as it is surely bringing in a pile of money for Google. Google said on its latest earnings call that mobile revenue, primarily mobile search, is a $1 billion business while mobile search queries are up 500 percent.
