おっしゃるとおりだと思います。
＞つまり、IT機器ベンダは、コモディティハードウェアとオープンソースソフトウェアに対抗できる新しい価値を提供しなくてはならない状況にいるわけです。そこで、IT機器ベンダは、従来分割されていたレイヤを垂直統合することで新たな機能を産み出し(※)、通常のコモディティハードウェアとオープンソースソフトウェアを単に組合わせたシステムを凌ぐ価値を提供しようとしているのではないか、その様に思いました。
これにも同意です。 ただ一点だけ付け加えさせていただくと、クラウドの Fabric とは何ぞや、という疑問にぶつかります。 一様に比較はできませんが、たとえば、Fabric を必要とする クラウドでの RDB と、ファイル･システムに可用性としての Fabirc を取り込んでいる HDFS では、それぞれのテクノロジーが設計された時代の、前提となるハードウェア環境が大きく異なると感じています。
いずれにしろ、いろいろな要素が再考され、再編成されることは、ユーザーに利益をもたらすと思われますので、大歓迎です。
